> Already paying for AI roleplay. What the same monthly money honestly buys across Lunafic, Character.AI, Janitor, Kindroid, Nomi, SillyTavern, and SpicyChat.

> **Update, October 13, 2026.** Character.AI filed for bankruptcy on October 12, and the company is being sold. The app still works for now, and it will close if no buyer keeps it running. We are honestly sad about this. Character.AI introduced millions of people to AI characters, many of us included.

Paying for AI roleplay is a strange market, because you often cannot tell what you bought until three weeks later. Free limits show up on day one, but the things that make you keep paying or cancel, the memory holding up, the character staying in character, the story surviving, only reveal themselves after you invested real evenings. We charge for one of the apps below, so read this with that in mind, and we will still tell you which subscriptions are the better answer for some people.

## What paying should buy

Before the list, the yardstick, because it makes every app below easy to judge. Paying should buy capacity for longer stories, since free limits always die mid-scene. It should buy writing quality, deeper models and characters that hold their voices. It should buy control, editing, directing, and keeping what you created. And it should follow your rhythm instead of charging the same whether you wrote every night or barely at all. Now the same money, app by app.

### 1. Lunafic, ours, the money goes into the writing

The core is on every plan, MC Mode where the AI never writes your character, avatar dialogue where every line sits beside the speaking character's portrait and name, an editor where you can fix any line, yours or the characters', chapters you can export, characters speaking their own language with translation underneath, Playable Worlds you play like co-op in a game, and the memory design where the AI reads your whole story plus the world's notes before every reply. Paying buys more monthly AI usage, a bigger story memory, and the Standard and Pro models, and it opens the Memory dialog, search, and Find and Replace. Standard and Pro have a 5-hour and a daily limit, about 50 Standard or 85 Pro messages every 5 hours, and Flash keeps working when you reach it. On Ultra and Ultra+ you can give one story an Extended memory that holds up to twice as much. In our October 2026 test, the Plus plan memory held a real player's story of 1,600 long turns, more than 1.2 million words, and the AI still answered every direct question about chapter 1. So for the person who pays and then writes for hours, the money goes into more story, and quiet weeks cost nothing extra. The bad parts, we are young, the library is young, anime-heavy, and questions that only hint at the past are still harder for the AI than direct ones.

### 2. Character.AI Plus, $9.99, the money goes into the queue

What paying buys is priority at busy hours and early access to features. What it does not buy is a different memory design, long stories still lose the thread on paid accounts, and the edit button stays gone. If you chat casually during evening peak, the queue skip has real value. If stories are why you pay, this is the same road with a faster lane.

### 3. Janitor AI, $12.99 or your own key, the money goes into the model

Two ways to spend here, the janitor+ subscription at $12.99 a month, which gives five times more memory and faster replies when the site is busy, or pay-per-use with your own model key, which can cost less than any subscription if you tune it. The platform's own community reviewed the paid tier badly for weak value. For technical users who bring their own model, the value is real. The platform around the models stays a plain chat with no chapters.

### 4. Kindroid, $13.99 to $59.99, the money goes into the one person

The clearest ladder in the companion world, standard, Ultra at $24.99, MAX at $59.99, each step buying something concrete, stronger memory, selfies, voice. If one deep bond is the product you want, this is honest pricing for it. No tier turns it into a multi-character story tool, that is not what it is.

### 5. Nomi, about $16 flat, the money goes into being remembered

People stay subscribed for one specific thing, it remembers your personal details across months, and the people who value that keep paying happily. The complaints from its own power users are the flat price regardless of usage and slow replies. Companion first, story second.

### 6. SillyTavern, $0 here, the money goes straight to the model

The software is free forever, so every dollar you budget goes directly into model usage, which means a tuned setup can out-write every subscription on this list for less. What you pay with instead is time, about a month of setup for a beginner, and being your own support forever after. For some people that trade works, for most it is a second job.

### 7. SpicyChat, about $16, the money goes into skipping the queue

Paying mainly removes the waiting queue and unlocks media. The memory complaint survives the payment, reviewers report the thread fading after fifteen to twenty messages even on paid plans. For the use case it names, it delivers.

## The renewal question

Before you renew any of these, including ours, look at the last story you truly invested in. Can you open it and edit any line. Can you search it, export it, and does the AI still honor what happened in chapter 4 by chapter 40. If the answer is no, your money is going into queues and lane skips, not into your story. The story-shaped answers are lined up in [the Character.AI comparison](https://lunafic.ai/compare/character-ai), and the two problems behind most cancellations are covered here, [the AI playing your character](https://lunafic.ai/blog/character-ai-alternative-where-the-ai-doesnt-play-your-character), and [memory across a long story](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-long-term-memory).
