> A fair 2026 review of the four AI companion apps people actually choose between, what each does well, where each stops, and what fits the story hunger.

A companion app answers a very specific want, one presence that knows you, remembers your days, and is there when you open the phone. More people want this than want to roleplay in worlds, and the best companion apps are genuinely good products, this review will say so plainly even though we build something else. Then it will explain why a companion, any companion, cannot hold a story, because the reason is structural and knowing it saves you a strange disappointment that a lot of people blame themselves for.

## Nomi, the one that remembers your life

Nomi's reputation is memory, and it is earned, long-term users describe a companion that recalls personal details across months and asks about things you mentioned weeks ago. About $16 a month flat. The criticism from its own power users is response speed and the flat price in quiet months. As a daily companion, one of the best made.

## Kindroid, the one you build yourself

Kindroid starts at $13.99 a month and goes to $59.99 at MAX, and the ladder buys concrete things, a backstory builder, selfies, voice, stronger memory. Reviews call it the most customizable companion of 2026. You build the person yourself in detail, which makes it the companion closest to roleplay. One bond, one endless conversation.

## Replika, the one that started the category

Voice calls, activities, a decade of polish, and a community that survived controversies that would have killed smaller products. Memory is strongest for feelings and relationship history, weaker for factual detail, and deeper features sit behind the paywall. A warm product with real history.

## Paradot, the clever one that sometimes contradicts itself

Real praise for short-term memory and conversation, story spaces separate from chat, the most experimental of the four. The community's honest complaint is inconsistency, there is a Reddit thread literally titled "Paradot has no memory and invents events". Ambitious, uneven.

## Why none of them can hold a story

This is the part worth explaining, and it is not a quality problem or a lazy team problem. A companion is one relationship in one endless conversation, and that shape protects the bond, the relationship is the record, nothing closes, everything is one thread. A story needs the opposite of almost all of that, characters with their own voices, chapters so the past holds still, revision so you can fix what the AI got wrong, export so your months of work are yours, secrets between characters so a reveal means something. You cannot bolt those onto one endless conversation, they are different shapes, like a phone call cannot become a novel by making the call longer.

That is also why some people feel an odd flatness after the honeymoon weeks, they were asking a conversation to accumulate, and conversations do not accumulate, they continue. The app is working exactly as designed.

## What we built on the other side, ours

Lunafic is roleplay that writes a real story. You play one character, the AI plays everyone else in their own voices and languages with the translation right under the line. You play it like a chat, every reply shows as avatar dialogue beside the speaking character's portrait and name, and the whole story is an editor kept as chapters you can edit, search, and export, always. Before each reply the AI reads your whole story so far plus the world's notes, so chapter 40 still knows what happened in chapter 4. In our October 2026 memory test, on a real player's story of 1,600 long turns, more than 1.2 million words, the AI still answered every direct question about facts we hid in chapter 1. The bad parts, our library is young and anime-heavy, and questions that only hint at the past are still harder for the AI than direct ones.

## Three questions people ask after this review

### Is a companion app or a story app better?

Different wants, being known on one side, making something that grows on the other. Some people use both, and there is nothing strange about that.

### Can companion apps do group roleplay?

Some add group surfaces, but the one-bond design is still underneath, and the coherence problems show up where you would expect. Multi-character scenes are a story problem, solved at the story layer, [starting with how memory is built](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-long-term-memory).

### What if my companion speaks Japanese?

Mostly they translate after the fact or sprinkle words in. If you want the character to actually speak their language with the romanized reading and the English underneath, that is a Lunafic feature and [the founding reason we built it](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-japanese-dialogue-translation). Go enjoy whichever app wins your evening, all of them are somebody's favorite. :D
