> An AI app for writing long stories chapter by chapter. Start chapters, keep recaps, find old scenes and export them, with a real 366-day world as the example.

A long roleplay rarely dies in one bad reply. It dies around message 400, when you want to check what a character promised three weeks ago, and the only way back is scrolling up through one endless chat.

An AI app for writing long stories chapter by chapter gives your story a table of contents: you decide where each chapter ends, and the AI keeps a recap of the story so far, chapter by chapter, so later chapters still know what happened. On Lunafic your chapters sit in a column beside the story, you start a new one with the plus or by typing `/newchapter`, and [story memory](https://lunafic.ai/features/story-memory/) reads those recaps before every reply.

Before we built Lunafic, I ran my long stories by hand with raw AI models for more than two years. The first thing I did every time was cut the story into chapters in a text file, because one unbroken log was impossible to read back, for me and for the AI.

## Why does one endless chat break a long story?

A chat is built for the next message. A story is built for the whole thing. In one long scroll, three things go wrong.

- **You cannot find anything.** The scene where everything changed is somewhere above you, between retries and small talk.
- **There are no turning points.** Nothing marks where one part ended, so neither you nor the AI can tell an old setup from what is true now.
- **The AI gets one long pile.** Most apps keep the recent messages and quietly drop the old ones. The long version of that problem is in [our post on long-term memory](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-long-term-memory).

Janet Murray, who studies storytelling in digital media, reminds us that printed books had to learn this too. In *Hamlet on the Holodeck* (Chapter 2, "Harbingers of the Holodeck") she writes that it took fifty years and more of printing to settle conventions like "title pages, prefaces, and chapter divisions, which together made the published book a coherent means of communication."

AI roleplay is in that early stage now. Chapters are not decoration. They turn a long log into something you can read, come back to, and finish.

## How do chapters work on Lunafic?

- **The left column is your table of contents.** It lists your chapters in order and marks the one you are in. On a phone, the chapters open from a drawer on the left.
- **You decide when a chapter ends.** Press the plus in the chapter column, or type `/newchapter` in the reply line. It creates the next chapter and takes you to it, in a Private world or a [Playable World](https://lunafic.ai/features/playable-worlds/).
- **The story stays a book.** Every line, yours or the characters', can be fixed by hand, and that uses no AI usage.
- **Memory follows the chapters.** Before every reply, the AI reads your newest scenes word for word, plus chapter recaps. When the memory fills, older scenes fold into short recaps by themselves. A fold never changes your story text.
- **On paid plans you can look inside.** The Memory dialog shows each earlier chapter's own memory, to read, edit, or write again with Update memory. Fold now is there too, and it is most useful between chapters.

## How do you close a chapter and find it again later?

1. **End on a turn.** A door opens, a deal is made, someone finally says your name. Then start the next chapter.
2. **Keep the one fact that must not slip.** Type `/note` and the fact, like a promise a character made. It goes to Story notes, and the AI keeps it in mind from then on.
3. **Find it again.** On paid plans, Cmd+K searches the whole story, with results grouped into Wiki, Chapters, Plot and Events.
4. **Take it with you.** Export, in the right panel under Tools, saves the chapter you are in as a DOCX or HTML file. Export is on every plan.

## What does this look like in a real world?

[They Cut My Cord, So I Dug a Well](https://lunafic.ai/scenarios/they-cut-my-cord-so-i-dug-a-well) is an original Playable World on Lunafic, the first of our Vaelmere series. You play Aldous Ferrant, a lord whose Duke cut his magic cord in front of the whole court. The prologue opens with the clock: "366 days. That is how long a lord with no magic has to turn a dead salt flat into a village, and that lord is you, Aldous Ferrant."

A 366-day story does not fit in one scroll, and the world keeps its own kind of chapter list. In the Wiki, the open panel for the village of Hollowell describes "the charcoal wall, the north face of Ferrant's one-room house where he writes the count every night (days left, wards alive, people, what works)." That is a recap, written by the hero.

Here is how I would cut this story into chapters. It is a plan, not a transcript, built only from what the world shows every player:

- **Chapter 1, The Bare Wrist.** At noon Old Hesper walks out of Saltfen to look at your bare wrist before your face.
- **Chapter 2, The First Spade.** You dig out the dead well alone, until Jory Caddock is on the rim hauling up your rubble without being asked. A note before moving on: *Jory was the first to help. He wants a cord.*
- **Chapter 3, The Engineer and the Healer.** Yevra Sunn arrives with a handcart of timber and gears, and Ama Teshen with seedlings.
- **Later chapters** follow the count on the wall: first water, the Brokers' Table's first offer, the Crown's count at midwinter, and the Oath Ceremony at the end of the year.

A long story also needs an end. This world has six endings, from Common to Legendary, written for the role of Aldous Ferrant. Each one needs at least 10 turns, and then the AI reads the author's conditions and decides whether your story earned it. When one arrives, a card shows its name, rarity and artwork, with the epilogue as the real finish. Keep this story closes the card, and you can keep playing.

## What chapters on Lunafic are NOT

- **They are not branches.** Branching from one line inside a story is switched off for now while we rebuild story memory. To try another path, open your Library, find the world under Sessions and press New session. Your first story stays as it was. Murray calls a story that shows "a single situation or plotline in multiple versions" a multiform story. Today Lunafic gives you that as two separate stories, not a tree.
- **They are not automatic.** If you never press the plus, you get one very long Chapter 1.
- **Export is one chapter at a time.** Not the whole book at once.
- **Not everything is free.** Chapters, notes, Export and story memory work on Free. Search, Find and replace, and the Memory dialog are on paid plans.
- **Recaps are short on purpose.** They can miss a small detail, which is what Story notes are for. Our library is also still young and mostly anime-style, and long stories need more stress tests.

## How to try a long story chapter by chapter on the free plan

1. Open [They Cut My Cord, So I Dug a Well](https://lunafic.ai/scenarios/they-cut-my-cord-so-i-dug-a-well) and press **Play**.
2. Choose the role Aldous Ferrant and one of the five openings. Endings are written for roles, so play the role if you want a finish.
3. Play until something turns, like the first spade in the ground. Then press the plus, or type `/newchapter`.
4. Type `/note` with the one fact the next chapter must keep.
5. A few chapters in, ask a character about Chapter 1. Then export Chapter 1 and read it back like a book.

Prefer your own world? [Start a Private world](https://lunafic.ai/docs/start-a-private-world), and the same chapters, [commands](https://lunafic.ai/docs/story-commands) and memory are there.
