> Why AI roleplay bots forget your plot after a few turns, what basic message search misses, and how Lunafic keeps story memory and who-knows-what separate so long stories stay consistent.

When you write a long roleplay or story with an AI, one of the most frustrating things is watching the bot forget everything after a few turns. Imagine you are an Emperor and you enforce a law in chapter 4, then in chapter 20 the AI completely forgets about that and does the opposite. If you are looking for an AI roleplay that actually remembers your whole plot, this is how we built long-term memory on Lunafic.

## What users say when bots forget everything

If you browse r/CharacterAI, you will see people talking about this all the time

> “Hey, this is grimdark, and you’re a Tech-Priest. Stop acting like a provincial Casanova! Neither pinned posts nor the instructions in my persona help.”

(from r/CharacterAI, with 660 upvotes)

> “And my current plot the bot keeps forgetting pretty basic stuff that was established, like that they have kissed before. It acts like this is the first time.”

(from r/CharacterAI)

When a bot forgets things you already established earlier in the story, it forces you to constantly remind the AI what happened.

## Why chat apps forget, and why basic memory features fail

I know this might sound technical, but most platforms now try to provide memories using RAG or semantic search. While this sounds like a solution on paper, in reality it just searches your old messages for matching keywords and pastes those old lines back into the prompt. Even SillyTavern’s own documentation mentions that their [message search does not guarantee better memory](https://docs.sillytavern.app/extensions/chat-vectorization/).

A keyword search can find an old line you typed before, but it does not actually understand the story. It does not know what is currently true in the plot, which rules you created, or what characters are supposed to know.

## How Lunafic remembers long stories

On Lunafic, the [story memory](https://lunafic.ai/features/story-memory/) and the character memory are two separate systems, and that split is what makes long stories hold together

- Your whole story, still one story no matter how long it grows
- A recap of the story you have moved past, so facts stop fading
- [World Bible](https://lunafic.ai/features/world-bible/) notes that store character profiles, personality traits, and lore
- A separate character memory that holds who knows what, so nobody suddenly knows things they should not
- Story notes you write yourself, like who learned your real name and when, kept with exactly who knows it

You can also see a small memory bar next to the model selector that shows you how full the memory is at any time.

## Keeping character secrets

In a real story, not every character knows everything. If your main character discovers a secret, other characters should not magically know about it until someone actually tells them in the story. That is why who-knows-what is kept apart from the story itself, and checked before every reply, in chapter 4 and in chapter 40 alike. No matter how long the story grows, a secret stays a secret.

## SillyTavern or Lunafic for long stories

If you love building your own setup and tweaking plugins yourself, a tool like SillyTavern is great for that. But we built Lunafic for people who just want to write and roleplay without spending hours managing a complex system.

## Common questions about Lunafic memory

### Does long-term memory cost extra money?

No. Story memory is part of Lunafic on every plan, including the free tier. There is no memory add-on to buy.

### Does recapping delete my original story text?

No, your original story text always stays saved in full inside your editor. The recap only shapes what the AI remembers. Your chapters are exactly as you wrote them.

### Can I search through my past chapters?

Yes, you can [search](https://lunafic.ai/features/universal-search/) anywhere inside your story to find old scenes, dialogue, and lore instantly.

## Start writing stories that remember

On Lunafic, you can write multi-chapter stories where relationships, promises, and secrets stay consistent from chapter one all the way to chapter forty. You can start writing for free without a credit card.
