> NovelAI, Sudowrite, Character.AI, SillyTavern, ChatGPT and Lunafic compared for writing anime fanfiction in 2026: canon, voice, memory, chapters and price.

You know the scene you want. Your OC walks into class 1-A, or the Survey Corps finds someone outside the Walls who should not exist, and you want it written in the voices you know from the show. Then the AI hands you a polite stranger wearing your favorite character's name.

The right AI app for anime fanfiction depends on how you write: NovelAI and Sudowrite if you draft the prose yourself, Character.AI and SillyTavern if you chat with characters, ChatGPT or Claude for brainstorming, and Lunafic if you want to build your own fanfic world and play it out as chapters with the cast in their own voices. None of them does everything, and two of them changed a lot this year.

One thing first: Lunafic is ours. We wrote its section knowing that, and we put its limits in it on purpose.

## What a fanfic writer needs from an AI

We asked the same five questions of every app.

- **Canon in.** Where do you put what the series already established, so the AI reads it every time?
- **Voice out.** Does a character still sound like themselves, with the honorifics, the nicknames, and the way they end a sentence?
- **Your take stays yours.** If you write your own OC, does the AI leave them alone? If you want to direct the whole cast, can you?
- **Chapter 12 remembers chapter 2.** Canon divergence only works if the story keeps the new facts it made.
- **Words you can post.** Can you get clean chapters out for AO3 or Wattpad?

What follows is how each app felt to write fanfic in, not a benchmark.

## The comparison at a glance

Four things for every app: what it is good for, how you write, where canon lives, and the cost to start.

- **NovelAI.** Good for prose you steer line by line. The AI continues your text, and canon lives in Lorebook entries you write. Free trial, then from $10 a month.
- **Sudowrite.** Good for planning and drafting chapters. You use author tools like Write, Draft and Rewrite, and canon lives in the Story Bible. Free trial, plans from $10 a month billed yearly.
- **Character.AI.** Good for quick chats with fan-made characters. You chat with one character, and canon lives in that character's profile. Free, c.ai+ is $9.99 a month.
- **SillyTavern.** Good for full control over any model. You chat alone or in group chats, and canon lives in Lorebooks (World Info). The app is free, you pay for or run the model.
- **ChatGPT or Claude.** Good for brainstorming and editing. You chat with an assistant, and canon lives in files you add to a Project. Free, paid plans from $20 a month.
- **Lunafic (ours).** Good for a long story with a cast, in chapters. You play your OC or direct as the author, and canon lives in the Wiki. Free plan with a monthly AI usage allowance.

### NovelAI, the quiet co-writer for people who like to steer

NovelAI feels like writing with someone who finishes your paragraph in your own style. You write, it continues, you cut what you do not like and keep going. Paid plans have unlimited text generation. Every tier can use GLM-4.6, and Opus ($25 a month) adds Xialong, a creative-writing model built on it and added in 2026. It does not refuse adult content, and its image generator is a favorite for anime-style art, which helps when you want a cover.

The friction is that canon fidelity is your job. The Lorebook adds an entry when its keyword shows up, so you write every character and every rule yourself, and you learn the generation settings. A scene with four characters talking needs you steering each line. The free trial is 50 text generations.

If you think in prose and like control over every sentence, NovelAI is a strong fit.

### Sudowrite, the novelist's workshop

Sudowrite is built around a Story Bible: synopsis, characters, worldbuilding and an outline that the AI reads before it writes. Write reads up to 20,000 words of your manuscript, Chapter Continuity links up to 25 chapter documents, and Draft turns your planned scenes into chapter prose. Its own fiction model, Muse, does not refuse dark or explicit scenes, according to Sudowrite. Plans are $10, $22 and $44 a month billed yearly, more month to month, and the trial needs no card.

The friction is that it is a tool for one author and one manuscript. Nobody talks back in a scene. The series only exists as far as you write it into the Story Bible, and anime habits like honorifics or Japanese lines only show up when you teach them. Heavy drafting also eats credits.

If you outline first and want full chapter drafts, Sudowrite is the most complete workshop here.

### Character.AI, the easiest door, with a question mark on it

Somebody has already made a character from almost any series, and you are talking to them in seconds.

For writing fanfiction, though, it is one chat with one character, not chapters, and long plots are where it struggled most for us. Fan-made characters from big franchises can also vanish: in September 2025 it removed Disney characters after a cease-and-desist letter. Since November 25, 2025, users under 18 cannot have open-ended chats. And on October 12, 2026 the company filed for Chapter 11 to run a court-supervised sale. The app still works, the sale should close by late November or early December, and if no buyer wants to keep the service going, it shuts down. Anything you wrote there that you care about, export it through the app or the website while you can.

For a quick conversation with a character you love, it is still the fastest door.

### SillyTavern, the workshop you build yourself

SillyTavern is free and open source (AGPL-3.0). It runs on your own machine and talks to almost any model, local or cloud. You can keep canon in Lorebooks (World Info) that fire on keywords, turn on vector storage so old messages can come back, and run a group chat when a scene needs three or four characters at once. Community character cards exist for nearly every fandom.

What you pay with is evenings. Setup means Node.js or Docker, a model provider or a local model, and a pile of presets before the first good scene. What you get at the end is a chat log, and turning it into a posted chapter is still your work. The model bill is yours too.

If tinkering is part of the hobby for you, this is the app with no ceiling.

### ChatGPT or Claude, the generalist you already have

These are good at brainstorming a divergence point, checking the pacing of a chapter, or tightening a fight scene. Both have Projects on every plan, a place for your canon notes and earlier chapters (ChatGPT Free allows 5 files per project, Claude Free allows up to five projects).

The friction is the assistant voice. A cold, blunt character slowly turns polite and helpful, and a confident wrong detail about canon is easy to miss. You manage memory yourself across long chats. Explicit content is refused, and OpenAI paused its planned adult mode indefinitely in March 2026. ChatGPT Plus is $20 a month, and Claude Pro is $20 month to month or $17 billed yearly.

As a second brain next to whatever you write in, they earn their place.

### Lunafic, ours, built for a cast in your fandom

We built Lunafic for long stories with a cast. For fanfiction you [start a Private world](https://lunafic.ai/docs/start-a-private-world), a room only you can open, with nothing published.

Then you build your cast in the [Wiki](https://lunafic.ai/docs/the-wiki). Build with AI has a Fanfiction mode for characters from an existing series. Each character has a Series field, a Speech Style panel for how they sound, Personality in three moods, and Speech Examples. The docs say five lines is the minimum, and to take them from the source if you have one. Nicknames record who says what, like Emilia-tan (called by Subaru). A Knowledge panel holds what a character knows and does not, which is where your divergence lives.

You choose your seat. In [MC Mode](https://lunafic.ai/features/mc-mode/) you write your OC and the AI plays everyone else. It never writes your character's dialogue, thoughts or actions. In [Author Mode](https://lunafic.ai/docs/two-ways-to-direct) you direct, and the AI writes every character, yours too. Your directions stay off the page, and a longer passage you write yourself, about 120 words or more, stays exactly as you wrote it.

For anime voices, [Narrative settings](https://lunafic.ai/features/dual-language/) has three dials. Set Character language to Japanese and Narrative language to English, and pick Romanized plus Translation as the Dialogue Format. Each line then comes in romaji, with the English under it. [Story memory](https://lunafic.ai/features/story-memory/) reads your newest scenes word for word, recaps of older chapters, promises and rules, the Wiki, and notes you write. A note can be a secret with the faces of who knows it. When characters start calling each other by a nickname or a title, the AI saves it for that story.

Type /newchapter to start the next chapter. Export takes the chapter you are in as a DOCX or HTML file, or copies it with formatting, on every plan. A chat from another app can be [imported](https://lunafic.ai/docs/import-your-chats) as a pasted log or a SillyTavern .jsonl file.

The honest limits:

- **It is a roleplay app first.** The story grows reply by reply. If you want full chapter drafts from an outline, Sudowrite or NovelAI may suit you better.
- **The library is young** and mostly anime-style worlds. For fanfiction you build your own world, which is the point, but there is less to browse.
- **Free has a monthly AI usage allowance** (20,000), the Flash model only, and up to 50 Wiki entries. The Pro model is for paid plans, with a 5-hour and a daily limit. If your allowance runs out, the story waits for next month or an upgrade.
- **Branching inside a story is off for now.** For a what-if, open a new session in the same world and your first story stays as it was.
- **Export works one chapter at a time,** and search, find and replace and the Memory dialog are on paid plans.

## Which one is for you

- You write the prose and want an AI that continues it: **NovelAI**.
- You outline first and want chapter drafts: **Sudowrite**.
- A quick chat with a fan-made character, and you accept the risk: **Character.AI**.
- You enjoy building your own setup: **SillyTavern**.
- Brainstorming and editing next to another tool: **ChatGPT or Claude**.
- A long fanfic where the cast talks in their own voices, you play your OC or direct everyone, and the story keeps its chapters: try **Lunafic**, knowing it is still young.

Then test it yourself. Write the scene that is hardest to keep in character, the one where your stoic lead almost says what they feel. Set up a fact in chapter 1, write on, and ask about it sideways a few chapters later. Most of these apps have a free way in, free as long as AI god still giving them money. :D
