> Why long roleplay stories break in every AI app, and which apps survive a hundred messages in 2026. Honest words from a founder who tested them all.

> **Update, October 13, 2026.** Character.AI filed for bankruptcy on October 12, and the company is being sold. The app still works for now, and it will close if no buyer keeps it running. We are honestly sad about this. Character.AI introduced millions of people to AI characters, many of us included.

Imagine you're entering the roleplay app, every single of them promising you their uniqueness. It went well for short exchange messages, but then something went wrong after an hour of talk, "Wait, does this AI truly understood what I'm talking about?", this problem happen to be in all kind of AI app, even ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, all suffer same problem. In the end you need to rephrase the things you've been working.

There are countless threads in reddit that talked about how suffering roleplay can be, but many developers simply ignoring the problem because they don't even use their own apps, so they don't truly understood how to resolve this problem. Their perspective are engineering perspective, not truly what users see.

## Why long stories break

Every chat app works the same way underneath, it hands the model the recent chunk of the conversation, and hoping everything would be okay. But AI model has a limit called Context Window, which now becoming bigger and bigger. But there's a problem with this approach which the cost and quality degradation. The more context you put the more expensive, and there's no guarantee the result will be exactly like you expected.

To give you the size of it, some models today claim they can take more than a million tokens in one go, that is a few full novels. So you might think the problem is already solved by making it bigger. It is not that simple. The bill grows with every token you put in, so an app that sends your whole history on every message pays for your whole history again and again. Because of that, most apps do the cheaper thing, they keep the recent messages and quietly drop the old ones. And even when a model does read everything, researchers who tested long inputs found that details sitting in the middle of a big pile get less attention than the start and the end. So a rule from chapter 4 can be technically inside the window, and still get missed.

If you want to read the longer version of this problem and how we think about it, [we have a whole article about story memory here](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-long-term-memory).

## How Lunafic was started to tackle this problem

Lunafic was started differently, the founder was writing roleplay stories with AI without any app, he simply use Large Language Model, and manage everything manually, literally manually for more than two years. He adapted it into Lunafic which resulting on understanding which context need to be prioritized. Before every reply the AI holds your whole story together, the world's notes on every character and rule, and who currently knows which secret. Because long stories need revision, Lunafic saves it as chapters, you can fix any line like a book, search everything you ever wrote, and export the whole story whenever you want. Lunafic never choose between editor and chat-based app, you play roleplay and the story is written at the same time. The cost scales through monthly AI usage, which suits a long habit better than a flat fee.

The recap part is worth explaining. It is written by the system for you, it keeps the plot points, the laws, the relationships, and it stays with the story from then on. The old chapters do not disappear.

In practice you type your character's line in the reply line like a chat, and every reply shows as avatar dialogue, each line beside the speaking character's portrait and name. The whole story is also the editor, so when a line comes out wrong you click into it and fix it by hand.

In October 2026 we released Lunafic V4. Now you can play other people's worlds like co-op in a game, choose who you are and how the story opens, and the world shows its own pictures when the big moments come. The library is still young with less characters you probably wanted, but once you understood how to use Lunafic, it is the most easiest to start creating your own world and characters. Most of our users are preferring to build on their own.

Lunafic still need more stress test to prove its capabilities, and we are all waiting for it.

In October 2026 we ran our first big one, on a real player's story, with their permission. 22 chapters, every turn is about 800 words, and one turn is your message and the reply, so by turn 1,600 that's more than 1.2 million words, about a dozen novels. We hid ten facts in chapter 1, like a law, a vow and a password, then asked about them again and again as the story went on. The test ran on the Plus plan memory with Flash, our lowest model tier. Every one of those facts was still in the memory the AI received at every point we checked, and at turn 1,600 the AI answered all 22 direct questions right. When the question was only a hint it connected less often, 63% at turn 1,600, and sometimes a character agrees when you say something false about the past. We are still working on those two. Extended memory on Ultra and Ultra+ holds up to twice that, about 3,200 turns. The whole test is in [this update](https://lunafic.ai/blog/claude-in-lunafic-character-status-memory-improvements).

### SillyTavern, the strongest ceiling if you build it

The open source always becoming solution in any-kind of software, and Silly Tavern is absolutely the choice. It has all everything you need to replace Character.ai, memory machinery yourself, extensions, summaries, lorebooks, it is very powerful software. But the real price come with your time and effort to setup and maintain it yourself. Do you even have time for that or you want just to enjoy entertainment time? The choice back to reader.

### Nomi and Kindroid, long bonds, few characters

These two are very well-known as an alternatives, Both hold personal continuity impressively across months, and users praise them for it. If you need Companion app, then this is the choice. Though, if you need different approach on roleplay like imagining yourself as a character, that's different story.

### Character.AI, the one that started it for most of us

The very well-known product with a massive free tier, and for years the place most people met AI roleplay first. Paid users often felt they did not get what they expected, memory in long stories stayed a problem, and the edit button was removed. On October 12, 2026 the company filed for bankruptcy and is being sold, and the app still works for now. If you only want free casual chat while it lasts, C.ai is still that.

### Janitor, SpicyChat, CrushOn, freedom with a horizon

The less filtered apps which people liking to use, recently product like Janitor introduce paid system, but it got review badly because it was not giving any values to the one who paid for it. Though, Janitor also giving you choice to put your own model which is nice. Meanwhile, reviewers report SpicyChat memory fading after fifteen to twenty messages even paid.

## Where to go next

We are just talking based on our experience, people can disagree, hated us, for this kind of article. But we are just being honest on how the community views. Go ahead test as many apps as you want, they're free as long as AI god still giving them money. :D
