> Leaving Character.AI in 2026, what a week on Janitor, SillyTavern, and Lunafic actually looks like, memory, editing, filters, and price, by the team that builds one of them.

> **Update, October 13, 2026.** Character.AI filed for bankruptcy on October 12, and the company is being sold. The app still works for now, and it will close if no buyer keeps it running. We are honestly sad about this. Character.AI introduced millions of people to AI characters, many of us included.

Nobody leaves Character.AI for no reason. Something specific broke, the AI forgot your story again, it talked as your character again, you tried to edit a reply and found the button is gone now, or the filter hit a story that was never extreme at all. The platform is still good at what it was built for, casual chat with endless characters, and its free tier is still massive. But you would not be searching for alternatives if that was what you came for. So instead of feature lists, here is what a week on each of the real alternatives actually feels like. One of them is ours, we will say which, and the ugly parts are included.

## A week on Janitor AI, the freedom door

The first days feel like breathing after a long time. The filter is mostly gone, the community characters are wild and creative, and the app itself is easy, no setup, just chat. Free chat runs on the built-in model, its first paid plan janitor+ is $12.99 a month, or you attach your own model key and pay per use. Around day three the shape of the place shows up, the free model starts losing the thread in longer scenes, you notice you are re-explaining things, and when you look for the official free daily limit you find the community arguing about it because it is not documented. Its own users also reviewed the new paid tier badly for not giving enough value. If what drove you out of Character.AI was the filter, this door fixes exactly that. If what drove you out was the forgetting, you will meet it again here, because underneath the freedom the model still reads only the recent chunk of the conversation, and the rest is quietly dropped.

## A week on SillyTavern, the open source door

Think of this choice like phones. SillyTavern is the open source one, you own everything, you configure everything, no company can ever take it away or put ads in it. Lunafic is the Apple one, you open it and it already works. Neither is the better phone, they are different phones.

The honest week on SillyTavern starts before the roleplay, with installation, providers, presets, lorebooks, and memory settings. A Reddit user described needing one month as a total beginner, the thread is [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/SillyTavernAI/comments/1pkhbxq/it_took_me_1_month_to_fully_set_up_sillytavern_as/). If you enjoy that, and many people genuinely do, the payoff is the most powerful setup in this whole space, any model, any setting, total privacy on your own machine. If you wanted to play tonight, the week is mostly configuration. The freedom is real, it is just freedom that costs your evenings first.

## A week on Lunafic, ours, the story door

We are the ones building this, so here is the week with the ugly parts. Day one you pick a world, not a character card, a world with characters, rules, and an opening scene, or you start building your own, which is the easiest world creation we have seen anywhere, and most of our users end up building their own. Since V4 you can play other people's worlds like co-op in a game, you choose who you are and how the story opens, and the world shows its own pictures when the big moments come. You play one character and the AI plays everyone else, and it never writes your lines, that is enforced. You play it like a chat, and every reply shows as avatar dialogue, each line beside the speaking character's portrait and name. When a reply comes out wrong you click into the line and fix it, because the whole story is an editor that saves as chapters. Before every reply the AI reads your newest scenes word for word, a recap of older chapters, the world's notes, and who currently knows which secret, so by day seven the story still remembers day one. We also tested it far past a week, on a real player's story of 1,600 long turns, more than 1.2 million words, and at turn 1,600 the AI still answered all 22 direct questions about facts we hid in chapter 1. Characters speak their own language with the romanized reading and English right underneath. The ugly parts, the library is young next to the giants, it is anime-heavy, and questions that only hint at the past are still harder for the AI than direct ones. We would rather you know that now than discover it in week three.

## The money question, plainly

Character.AI Plus is $9.99 and mostly buys priority at busy hours. Janitor is $12.99 for janitor+, or pay per use with your own key. SillyTavern is free, you pay the model provider instead, plus your setup time. Lunafic has a free tier with monthly AI usage, no card to start, and paying buys more AI usage, a bigger story memory, and stronger models, and it opens the Memory dialog, search, and Find and Replace.

## Spend one evening, not one month

Whichever door sounds like yours, run the same test on all of them. Establish something concrete in your first ten messages, a promise, a debt, a name. Write sixty more messages. Then ask about it indirectly. Then try to edit one bad line. The app where all three feel natural is your app, and you will know in one evening.
