> Character.AI filed for Chapter 11 on October 12, 2026. A roleplay app founder on the broken AI economy, the lawsuits, what still breaks in AI roleplay, and why cheap and fast AI decides the future.

The news about Character.AI filing for bankruptcy might have already been heard by you. We found this very sad, because this will also impact how AI roleplay startups look in investors' eyes, and what the future looks like.

I build Lunafic, an AI Roleplay app where you build stories with long memories. So yes, I'm biased and you should read this with that in mind. But I was a roleplayer long before I built this.

## Character.AI, the one that started it for most of us

On October 12, 2026 Character.AI [filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy](https://blog.character.ai/an-update-on-character-ai/). Chapter 11 means the company goes through a court process to sell itself, and [Disney already put the first offer of $20 million](https://whtc.com/2026/10/13/character-ai-files-for-bankruptcy-agrees-to-sell-some-assets-to-disney-for-20-million/) for some of its assets. The app still works right now, but if no buyer wants to keep it running, it will close. They expect the sale to finish around late November or early December.

Character.AI gave millions of people their first AI roleplay, with the biggest library of characters and a free tier anyone could open. Whatever you think about the filter or the memory, most of us met AI characters there first, and that deserves respect.

## Free roleplay was never free

Every single message you send, the AI has to read your story again and write a reply, and that runs on real GPUs (the computer chips that run AI) that cost real money. The longer your roleplay, the more it has to read, so the more each reply costs.

Character.AI never published its numbers, but [outside estimates](https://sacra.com/c/character-ai/) put its revenue around $30 million a year, with more than 20 million people using it every month. Most of those people never paid, and every one of their messages still cost money. In 2024 Google paid a reported $2.7 billion to license their technology and hired the founders back, and after that Character.AI stopped training its own big AI models. So the company kept millions of free users, and lost the people who built the engine.

Here are our own numbers, because I think you deserve real ones. One reply in a long story costs us somewhere between less than one cent and about five cents, depending on the model. A player who plays every day sends around 600 replies a month. Do that math for 20 million people and you understand why "unlimited free" can't last forever, for anyone, us included.

## The lawsuits nobody in this space can ignore

This part is heavy. In January 2026 Character.AI and Google [agreed to settle five lawsuits](https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/07/business/character-ai-google-settle-teen-suicide-lawsuit) from families of teenagers who harmed themselves or died by suicide, including the case of 14-year-old Sewell Setzer III. The terms are confidential. One day later Kentucky became the first US state to sue an AI chatbot company, and that company was Character.AI. Before all that, in October 2025, they [announced that people under 18](https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-10-29/character-ai-to-ban-children-under-18-from-talking-to-its-chatbots) could no longer have open-ended chats with characters.

I'm not going to pretend I know what happened in each case. What I know is AI characters can feel very real, and every app in this space, including us, has to take that seriously. Safety work, lawyers, and settlements all cost money too.

## What still breaks in AI roleplay, including ours

If you roleplay long enough, you know this list by heart.

- The AI forgets what happened yesterday, especially in long stories
- The AI talks and acts for your character
- The same phrases again and again
- Characters slowly drift away from who they are

I found these in every app I tested. Lunafic was built around some of them. For example MC Mode is a feature that protects your character, so the AI plays everyone else and leaves your character to you, and the story saves as chapters you can edit like a book. But let me be honest about our side too.

- Our memory still drops details in very long stories, we tested against 1600+ turns. We shipped fixes this week, it's better, it's not solved
- The AI sometimes misspells names it invented itself
- Long stories use more AI, so our heaviest players run out of their monthly usage before the month ends
- Our library is young, and we're a small team

## Cheap and fast AI is what roleplay is waiting for

My honest opinion is that for roleplay, the smartest AI in the world is overkill most of the time. What players need is fast replies, low cost, and characters that stay in character.

The good news is AI gets cheaper very fast. [Epoch AI](https://epoch.ai/data-insights/ai-inference-price-trends), a research group that tracks this, found that the same quality of AI gets roughly 10 to 50 times cheaper every year. In our app, about half of all replies already run on our cheapest model.

So the future of AI roleplay really depends on how fast AI research and infrastructure (the data centers and chips) can make good models cheap. When that happens, a free tier stops being a money hole, and small teams can survive without a $2.7 billion deal. Until then every app is doing the same math every day, "how much can we give for free before we disappear?"

## Where Lunafic stands

We're building Lunafic as a premium place for roleplay stories, long stories with memory, many characters in one scene, and chapters you can edit. That costs more to run than a quick chat, and I won't pretend it doesn't.

People who want low cost or free matter to us too. We have a free tier today, and we're still figuring out how to make it better without going broke. I can't promise a date, honestly we don't know yet.

## If you're looking for a new place

Go test as many apps as you want, most of them are free while the AI god still pays their GPU bills. :D Take your time and find the one that fits how you roleplay. And if Character.AI finds a buyer that keeps it running, honestly I'll be happy too.

Arbi from Lunafic
