> Your AI roleplay broke a rule from chapter 4 in chapter 20? Eight habits that keep long stories consistent on any app, and how to do each one on Lunafic.

You set a rule in chapter 4, and in chapter 20 the AI breaks it like it never existed. To keep an AI roleplay consistent after many chapters, put the few facts that must never break where the AI reads them on every reply, keep the cast in the scene current, and fix wrong lines at the source instead of arguing with the AI inside the story. These habits work on most roleplay apps, and below each one is how to do it on Lunafic.

How Lunafic's memory works underneath, with our 1,600-turn test, is in [AI roleplay with long-term memory](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-long-term-memory). This post is the player's side.

## Why does the AI break a rule from 16 chapters ago?

Usually because the rule lived in one old message. By chapter 20 it sits under thousands of lines, and an old fact fades unless something brings it back. The other cause is noise, like ten characters in one room, or an argument with the AI that is now part of the story.

Anime studios solved a version of this long ago. Dozens of animators draw the same character, so everyone works from setting sheets, called settei, with the hairstyle and the scar fixed on paper. A long roleplay needs the same thing, just smaller.

## 1. Which facts must never break?

Pick three to five, like a promise, a death, a deadline or a rule of magic. If everything is important, nothing is.

Take [Who Put the Hearth Out](https://lunafic.ai/scenarios/who-put-the-hearth-out), a court romance on Lunafic where you play Seraphine Aurel. Thirteen years ago she told Casimir Rook "I shall not call thee back", and she has never broken a promise. Casimir's magic hangs on a Vow: if he ever says his dead liege's name, Serane Morrow, aloud, his cord greys and his Art ends. And the betrothal runs on a clock of a hundred and twenty days. Break one and the story stops making sense.

**On Lunafic:** in a Private world, put those facts in the [Wiki](https://lunafic.ai/features/world-bible/), set the panel to Always, and star the entry. In a Playable World the Wiki is read only, so your own facts go in story notes, which the AI reads on every reply. Hearth's author put the clock in Status, a "Days to the Thaw" value that drops as days pass. If it drifts, press Change on the card and your number wins.

## 2. Who is in the scene right now?

Characters who appear out of nowhere, or answer a question they never heard, are usually a stage problem. When someone leaves the room, say so, and take them off whatever list your app uses for who is present.

**On Lunafic:** the [In this scene](https://lunafic.ai/features/in-this-scene/) row above the reply line is the stage. The AI reads the full sheet of everyone on it, and the rest wait backstage. Two or three on stage is plenty, and cheaper too. When a character dies or leaves for good, the AI marks them gone, and Bring back undoes it if that was wrong.

## 3. When should you close a chapter?

At natural breaks, like a night's sleep, a journey or a jump in time. A chapter of 500 messages is a chat log with a title. Closing it gives the story a place to sum up.

**On Lunafic:** type `/newchapter` in the reply line, or press the plus in the left column. Each chapter keeps its own recap in [story memory](https://lunafic.ai/features/story-memory/). The small bar inside the Memory button turns amber at three quarters full and pink at nine tenths. On paid plans, Fold now in the Memory dialog turns older scenes into short recaps while the newest stay word for word. On Free, folding happens by itself when the memory fills.

## 4. How do you check what the story remembers?

If your app shows its memory, read it after a big chapter and fix any wrong summary. A wrong recap is worse than none, because the AI trusts it.

**On Lunafic:** press Memory or type `/memory`. The Memory dialog opens on paid plans. It shows what your last reply used, each chapter's recap, and the promises and rules kept word for word. Edit a recap, remove a promise the AI should stop quoting, or press Update memory to write a chapter's memory again. Restore previous memory puts the old one back. On Free the memory still works, you just can't see inside it, so lean on habit 8.

## 5. What should a note say?

Facts, not instructions. A note is for something true in the story that the page never says. An instruction like "make her colder" fixes one reply, then confuses the next fifty.

A note you might write in Hearth:

- Good: Hobb knows the Duke of the Reach came to the door. Nobody else does.
- Bad: Make Hobb more loyal.
- Bad: They argued in chapter 4. The chapter already says so.

**On Lunafic:** type `/note` and the fact. A note holds one fact, up to 200 characters. A story holds 10 notes on Free and 30 on paid plans, secrets included. For a secret, type `/secret` and tap the faces of who knows it. Characters in the scene who don't know it are written unaware of it.

## 6. Why fix the sheet instead of the scene?

When a character drifts, the habit is to correct the reply, then the next one. Robert McKee, on scenes that keep failing however often the lines are reworded, puts it in five words: "Dialogue problems are story problems." (*Dialogue*, "Design Flaws"). In roleplay, the story problem is usually the character's sheet. If Speech Style is one vague line, every reply drifts the same way.

**On Lunafic:** in your own world, open the character's Wiki page and fix the panel that failed, almost always Speech Style or Personality. One fix improves every future scene. In a Playable World you can still tap a character in In this scene to fix a name they use for someone, or change a Status value.

## 7. Why retry instead of arguing?

Because the argument stays in the story. Reply "No, she would never say that, remember the promise?" and the wrong line and your complaint both become part of what the AI reads next. McKee's law of diminishing returns applies here too: "The more often an experience repeats, the less effect it has." Your fifth reminder works worse than your first.

**On Lunafic:** press Retry to write the reply again, or Remove to delete it. Or click into the story and change the wrong words yourself. When you fix a recent reply, the AI reads your version from then on, and editing by hand uses no AI usage. Right after a reply you can also type `/ooc` and a short note, like "Casimir never says her name", and the AI writes that reply again with your note. No character hears it.

## 8. How do you test whether the story remembers?

Ask sideways. A direct question tests whether the AI can find a fact. A hint tests whether the story uses it, which is harder. In our memory test, at turn 1,600 the AI answered every direct question right, and connected a hint 63% of the time.

In Hearth, don't ask Casimir about his Vow. Bring up his dead liege in conversation and see whether he names her, or calls her "the lady", the way his sheet says he does.

## A short routine for long stories

From our docs, a minute per chapter:

- **At the end of a chapter.** Glance at the Memory bar. Press Fold now if it is amber or pink.
- **Add one note.** Only if the chapter earned one.
- **If a reply felt off.** Open the Memory dialog and fix the wrong line there.

On Free, swap the last step for Retry or a hand edit.

## What this is NOT

- **Not a guarantee.** These habits make breaks rarer, not impossible. A character may still agree when you say something false about the past.
- **Not a full record.** A fold turns old scenes into recaps, and a tiny detail like the color of a coat can blur. Keep what must stay exact in a note.
- **Not the same on every plan.** The Memory dialog, Fold now and search are on paid plans. Free still remembers, with a smaller memory and 10 notes per story.

## Try it on the free plan

1. Open [Who Put the Hearth Out](https://lunafic.ai/scenarios/who-put-the-hearth-out) and press Play.
2. In chapter 1, save one fact with `/note`, like a promise Seraphine makes.
3. Keep In this scene to two or three people.
4. Play to a natural break, then type `/newchapter`.
5. Two chapters later, test your fact sideways. If a reply gets it wrong, retry or edit it.
