Everything is going well, the banter, the slow build, the world you two built together, then twenty replies in, she asks your name like you never met. You stare at the screen thinking, "Wait, we already kissed, why are you acting like this is the first time we talk?" That is OOC, out of character, and it happens because the AI only reads the recent chunk of your chat, and the moments that shaped the character slowly fall out of that chunk. ## What does OOC actually mean? OOC stands for out of character. It is the moment an AI character breaks who they are, forgetting a fact you established, dropping their speech style, or suddenly talking like a customer service assistant instead of the person you met. Roleplayers have used the word for decades, and in AI apps it became the word for the moment the spell breaks. A tsundere who stops being stubborn is OOC. A villain who apologizes is OOC. A character who knows a secret nobody told them is also OOC, and that second kind is worse, because it breaks the story logic, not just the personality. ## Why does the AI forget who it is? Every chat app works the same way underneath, it hands the model the recent chunk of the conversation, and hoping everything would be okay. But AI models have a limit called the Context Window, and the more you put in, the more expensive it gets. So most apps quietly keep the recent messages and drop the old ones. The kiss, the promise, the rule you set on day one, all of it scrolls out of the window, and the model has nothing left that shapes the character. There is a second problem on top of that. Even when a model does read a long history, researchers found that details sitting in the middle of a big pile get less attention than the start and the end. So your character definition can be technically inside the window, and still get missed, which is why OOC gets worse exactly when your story gets good. ## The "we already kissed" problem This is not a rare complaint. One Character.AI user wrote it plainly, the bot keeps forgetting basic stuff, and she had to keep re-adding details that were already established, "like that they have kissed before, the bot keeps acting like this is the first time". Reddit roleplay communities have million of members and this exact complaint shows up every week, on every app. The reason is simple once you see it. Personality and memory are the same thing for an AI character. A character is the sum of what happened to them, and when the app drops what happened, the character goes with it. ## How do people fight OOC today? - Re-paste the character description into the chat when it drifts. It works, for a while, then the paste itself scrolls out of the window. - Write OOC notes in brackets, like (remember, she already knows about the letter). Same fate, it helps for a few replies, then it is gone. - Restart the chat when it gets bad. The nuclear option, you keep the character, you lose the story. - Pay for a memory add-on, where the app offers one. It softens the problem, it does not remove it, because the add-on sits outside the story you actually read. "You still remember the night at the shrine" costs one line and re-anchors everything attached to it. - [object Object]How they talk, what they never say, what they want. A definition that is a novel gets skimmed by the model the same way it gets skimmed by a human. - [object Object]Every extra character splits the window's attention. Two or three voices hold, a crowd goes OOC first. - [object Object]This is the big one. A recap you can read and edit becomes the character's memory, and it survives no matter how far the chat scrolls. - [object Object]Not in message thirty, in a place that is always in front of the model. ## What Lunafic does differently Lunafic was built by someone who fought this problem manually for more than two years before building the product, so the fixes are structural, not pasted in.
