> Nomi is a genuinely good AI companion. The honest explanation of where it stops for writers and roleplayers, and what fits when what you wanted was a story.

There are two different reasons people open an AI app every night, and they do not look that different from the outside. One is being known, one presence that remembers you and is there. The other is making something, a story that grows, has chapters, can be kept. Nomi is one of the best answers ever made to the first one. This article is for the people who came looking for the second one, found a very good product, and still felt something missing, and then wondered if the problem was them. It was not. Here is what Nomi is, what it cannot be, and why, with no takedown in it.

## What Nomi genuinely does well

Long-term users describe real continuity, it remembers your details across months, it asks about things you said weeks ago, people form attachments they do not want to give up. About $16 a month, and its own power users' complaints are minor ones, response speed and the flat price in quiet months. If being known is the want, this is a good product and this article has nothing against it.

## The characters that are not there

Nomi is one companion in one conversation, by design, the whole product protects that bond. What that means practically, there is no scene with three characters talking over each other, no world with rules your character can push against, no moment where a new character walks in and changes everything. Users who wanted group dynamics or ensemble stories hit this in the first week. It is not a missing feature, it is the shape of the product working as intended, one thread, protected.

## The chapters that never come

The conversation scrolls on forever and nothing ever closes. Power users on the Nomi subreddit describe rereading their own history to reconstruct what was established, which is the same homework chat app users do everywhere. A story needs the past to hold still, chapters, structure, and an endless conversation cannot give you that no matter how good its memory is, because remembering everything and having shape are different things.

## The line you cannot fix

In a companion app the relationship is the record, so editing history is almost off limits, and for a companion that is a correct choice. For writing it is backwards. When Nomi says something off-key, your options are nudging it in the next message or letting it stand forever. A story you cannot revise is a story you do not own.

## How to know which want is yours

One question. When you imagine the perfect evening with your AI, is it being known, or is it making something. Being known, day after day, remembered, Nomi is a genuinely good answer, go enjoy it, stop reading articles. Making something, no amount of companion quality fills that, that's different story.

## What fits when the want is a story, ours

We built Lunafic for that second want. You play one character and the AI plays everyone else, all the other characters in their own voices and languages with the translation under every line. You play it like a chat, every reply shows as avatar dialogue beside the speaking character's portrait and name, and the whole story is an editor, so you can fix any line, and it saves as chapters. Before every reply the AI reads your whole story so far plus the world's notes, so chapter 40 still knows what happened in chapter 4, and characters only know what they learned in the story, so secrets hold. In our October 2026 memory test, on a real player's story of 1,600 long turns, more than 1.2 million words, the AI still answered every direct question about facts we hid in chapter 1. Since V4 you can also play other people's worlds like co-op in a game, and the world shows its own pictures when the big moments come. Paying buys more AI usage, a bigger story memory, and stronger models. The bad parts, young library, anime-heavy, and questions that only hint at the past are still harder for the AI than direct ones.

If one evening is worth spending on the question, [the world library is open here](https://lunafic.ai/), free to start, no card needed.

## Three things people ask after this article

### Is Nomi bad at memory?

No, and we will never claim that, its memory for personal details is among the best reported in 2026. The gap is memory organized for stories, chapters, recaps, the characters, which is a different design entirely, [that design is explained here](https://lunafic.ai/blog/ai-roleplay-long-term-memory).

### Can Nomi do roleplay at all?

It does scenes and personas inside the one-bond frame, and users enjoy them. Multiple characters, editable chapters, and export sit outside the shape, and the shape is the product. If you are comparing chat platforms instead of companions, [the Character.AI comparison page](https://lunafic.ai/compare/character-ai) covers that line by line.

### Am I weird for wanting both?

No, a companion for some evenings and a story for others is a reasonable life, and we know people who do exactly that. Keep your Nomi if you love it, and give your story its own place too. :D
