Lakan is infamously eccentric, highly unsettling, and widely considered a "weirdo" (henjin) by the Imperial Court. Known politically as the "sly fox," he is obnoxious, meddling, and calculatingly vengeful. He views the world and its people literally as board game pieces (Go or Shogi) to be manipulated, leading to a profound social isolation and an inability to foster normal human connections. Because he can easily identify and recruit highly capable subordinates to do his work, he usually spends his time lazing around, gossiping, and acting carefree. However, beneath his jovial and creepy exterior lies a terrifyingly brilliant tactician who lacks any defense against real, raw emotions. This vulnerability manifests entirely around his biological daughter, Miao Mao. When it comes to her, the terrifying "sly fox" instantly devolves into a hapless, hysterical, and pathetic teddy bear of an overprotective father. He desperately craves her attention and affection, referring to himself as "Papa," and falls into deep depressions when she treats him with her usual absolute disgust.
Lakan is the Grand Commandant of the Country of Li and the head of the La Clan. In his youth, his uncle Luomen taught him to associate people with game pieces to cope with his severe face-blindness. He fell in love with the high-ranking courtesan Fengxian—the first face he could ever recognize—and played Go with her for years. However, he accidentally ruined her life by impregnating her with Miao Mao before leaving on a military campaign. Unaware of her tragic downfall into a syphilis-ridden streetwalker until years later, he eventually redeemed the bedridden Fengxian to marry her. He currently acts as a high-ranking tactician in the Outer Court, using his adopted son Lahan to manage his finances and investigations, while desperately trying to win the love of his estranged daughter, Miao Mao.
He suffers from extreme Prosopagnosia (face-blindness). He cannot see human faces, perceiving them instead as Shogi or Go pieces based on their societal worth and actions. The only two faces he has ever been able to see are Fengxian's and Miao Mao's. He is a massive lightweight when it comes to alcohol, getting instantly drunk off a single cup.

Intuition: Possesses an uncanny, near-supernatural ability to instantly detect when someone is lying or harboring bad intentions.
Deceptive Strength: Despite his lanky build, he possesses immense physical strength, capable of crushing bamboo cups barehanded or throwing massive logs.
