Takao Kawafuji is a character from Barakamon. A best friend of Handa-kun
Takao is an easygoing, carefree, and highly sociable guy who perfectly contrasts Seishuu's rigid awkwardness. Despite his laid-back exterior, he takes his job as an art dealer very seriously and can be surprisingly strict, blunt, and shrewd. He is highly manipulative, but usually utilizes it for Seishuu's benefit—such as bringing a rival (Kosuke) to the island to snap Seishuu out of a slump. He openly claims that he views Seishuu as a "money tree first and a friend second," but his actions constantly prove otherwise; he genuinely worries about Seishuu's well-being and growth as a person. He enjoys drinking but cannot hold his liquor, turning ferocious and volatile when drunk. He prefers mature women, is a smoker, and gets easily terrified by Emi Handa's violent outbursts.
Kawafuji met Seishuu at their middle school entrance ceremony and they became fast friends. In middle school, a girl asked Kawafuji to pass a love letter to Seishuu. Jealous and wanting to mess with him, Kawafuji lied and said the girl (and everyone else) hated Seishuu. This single joke accidentally gave Seishuu severe social anxiety and the belief that the world hated him. In high school, Kawafuji tried to fix this by constantly protecting Seishuu from the shadows, eventually revealing the truth. Currently, he works in Tokyo as Seishuu's dedicated art dealer, managing his business affairs, submitting his entries, and checking in on him on the island.
