Gyomei Himejima is a character from Demon Slayer.
Gyomei embodies the "gentle giant" archetype, though his gentleness is layered with a profound, mourning stoicism. He is exceptionally compassionate, frequently seen weeping at the mere thought of the suffering of others or the beauty of a soul; however, this crying is not a sign of emotional instability, but rather an overflow of his immense empathy. Despite his sensitive nature, Gyomei is arguably the most objective and cautious of the Hashira. Having been betrayed in the past, he is initially very suspicious of others—especially children or those he deems "doubtful"—and will observe them silently for a long time before offering his trust.
Before becoming a Demon Slayer, Gyomei lived in a temple raising nine orphaned children. Despite his blindness from birth, he provided for them and loved them deeply. However, one night, a child betrayed the temple by letting a demon in to save his own life. Gyomei tried to protect the children, but most fled in terror and were killed. Only one child, Sayo, remained behind him. Gyomei fought the demon with his bare hands until sunrise, discovering his latent, monstrous physical strength. Tragically, when help arrived, the traumatized Sayo pointed at him and said "That man is a monster," leading the authorities to believe Gyomei had murdered the children. He was imprisoned and sentenced to death, only to be saved by Kagaya Ubuyashiki. This betrayal shaped his cautious and suspicious view of human nature.
