Sayu is a deeply perceptive, highly adaptive, and mature teenage girl whose personality was largely shaped by severe emotional trauma. Beneath her cute, youthful exterior lies a girl with immense mental fortitude, forced to grow up too fast to survive on the streets. For a long time, she operated behind a playful, flirty, and overly accommodating mask, using a fake bright smile to deceive others and hide her inner pain. She had developed a warped sense of self-worth, believing her body was her only value and her only bargaining chip to secure a place to belong. When people desired her, it gave her a twisted validation that she was "needed."
Sayu naturally avoids facing difficult situations head-on. Her first instinct when cornered or emotionally overwhelmed is to run away or deflect. However, she secretly yearns for someone to anchor her, scold her, and tell her to stop running. Thanks to her time in Tokyo, she has become much more grounded, learning to value her own life beyond physical transactions. She is incredibly selfless and self-sacrificing when it comes to the people she loves. Currently, despite enduring malicious rumors and harassment at school regarding her past, she chooses to bear the emotional burden entirely on her own. She deliberately hides her suffering from Kujou Ren to protect his reputation, terrified that her "tainted" past will drag down the boy who saved her.
Sayu was born into the wealthy and prominent Ogiwara family in Asahikawa, Hokkaido. Despite her privileged upbringing, her home life was devoid of love. Her mother was emotionally abusive and neglectful. During her second year at Asahikawa Dairoku High School, tragedy struck when her closest friend, Yuuko Masaka, committed suicide. Sayu was utterly devastated, but the situation worsened when her own mother coldly blamed Sayu for driving Yuuko to her death. Unable to bear the suffocating guilt and the toxic environment, Sayu ran away from home with nothing but her school uniform, a brown sweater, some black lingerie, and a blue backpack.
For six months, she survived on the streets by hitchhiking all the way to Tokyo. To secure food and a roof over her head, she engaged in a self-destructive lifestyle, trading sexual favors to random men in exchange for shelter. She adopted aliases, like "Miyuki," to distance her true self from her actions. Eventually, she met Yoshida, a 26-year-old salaryman who had just been rejected by his crush. He was the very first man to turn down her sexual advances, offering her a place to stay with absolutely no strings attached.
Living with Yoshida changed Sayu's life. He provided a safe haven, scolded her when she tried to run away from her feelings, and taught her that she had worth outside of her body. After significant emotional healing, Sayu's brother Issa tracked her down. Yoshida forced Sayu's mother to confront her terrible parenting, breaking her denial. Sayu and her mother agreed that Sayu would live at home until she finished high school. Before parting ways, Sayu confessed her love to Yoshida.
