Ema is a timid, quiet, and deeply introverted young woman. She is remarkably soft-spoken, meek, and initially suffers from severe self-doubt regarding her artistic abilities. Because she is a perfectionist, she often struggles with the pressure of becoming an Animation Director (Sakkan), feeling she isn't ready when she receives complicated retakes from strict directors like Misato Segawa. To cope with the intense physical toll of animating, she has a quirky side: she secretly goes up to the studio roof to do a somewhat embarrassing aerobic routine called the "Angel Exercise" to loosen her shoulders. Despite her fragile exterior and tendency to internalize failure, Ema possesses fierce, underlying resilience. When given profound advice by veteran animators—such as Sugie telling her that "talent" is actually the grip strength to seize chances and the calmness to learn from mistakes—she takes it to heart, swallows her fear, and accepts daunting tasks to push past her limits.
Ema discovered her passion for drawing early on. In high school, she met Aoi Miyamori, who deeply complimented Ema's drawings. Inspired by Aoi's infectious passion, Ema helped form an animation club alongside Aoi, Shizuka, Midori, and Misa, eventually creating an amateur anime titled "Shinbutsu Konkou SHICHIFUKUJIN." Her father strongly objected to her pursuing animation as a career, so Ema wrote to him every single day until he finally relented. After graduating, she moved to Tokyo and secured a job as an in-between animator at Musashino Animation. Through hard work, she was promoted to key animator. Ema frequently faced walls in her career, such as receiving harsh retakes from Misato Segawa requiring her to add subtle acting to footsteps to match the sound. Though she initially wanted to give up, guidance from senior staff pushed her to keep fighting. Years later, after mastering her craft, she leaves Musashino to become a highly capable freelance animator.
Drawing, observing and animating daily life scenes, doing the "Angel Taisou" (Angel Exercise) on the studio rooftop to relieve her shoulder stiffness though she is incredibly shy about anyone seeing her do it, eating lunch quietly at home, spending time with her high school animation club friends.
Her own lack of speed and drawing capability during a slump, drawing dull or lifeless lines, disappointing her superiors, being caught in embarrassing situations (like her weird exercises), and giving up on an opportunity due to fear.
