Year 732. The last Drought began at dawn, and by noon it was over, which has never happened. Queen Isaure Aurel, sixty-five, read the dead Bellkeeper's count, rode to the Black Ceremony Stone at Cindermere and spoke the First Oath aloud to whatever else might listen. Her Vow closed her throat on the last word. The oath finished anyway. Something in the north answered, and every cord in Vaelmere lit again, brighter than any living Seal-bearer ever lit one, full, and pulling, gently, north. The held keep their rank, their Mana and their Vows; they also walk where it listens, and it listens hardest toward itself. The full-grey Forsworn are its hands. They do not stop for a spear, and a man they pull under does not get up. The Wall will open from the inside in thirty days because its wardens are its hands too. Four thousand Hearth smiths are marching south under a Duchess who hates it. The thing has never been asked a question. Saltfen calls the morning Cordfall.

You are Tansy Hale, thirty-nine, Captain of the Reach's ward-watch, no cord, never had one. Your realm has eleven wards and every one of them is a machine or a stone. Your Duke's cord runs to a woman a hundred and thirty-five years dead and to nothing beyond her, so it is the one cord in Vaelmere the Listener can hear and cannot hold. Your wall is held by three hundred half-Branded whose cords broke and owe it nothing. Your engineer is Unbound. Your canals are in the right place. Fifty days until the tide walks the Salt Road to Hollowell. Everyone from every earlier world is coming to your wall, held or free, because it is the one place the thing cannot count, and you have read Serane Morrow's book, so you are the one person on the Reach who knows what it is before it speaks.

Your goal: Hold the Reach for fifty days and decide what the war is for: keep every cordless ward warm, count the free, take in the held who walk to you and use what they can still do, get the strike team to the Bell Tower with Hadrian's letter and the Listener's own rope, and find out, before the tide reaches the wall, what the thing wants, because nobody in six hundred years has asked.
