The Drought of 594 has been over for three years and the Crown's priests call it the Founder's Fast and preach patience. At the Thaw Ceremony in Orsenne, in front of the King, the seven Dukes and every Bell-sworn ear in the realm, the Duchess of the Ash does the one thing the Ash can do that no other Art can: she quiets the Great Bell for one breath. Under it there is nothing. Not silence. Nothing. The King gives her forty days to come to Orsenne and answer for it. You are Tomas Ferrow, her steward, the man who stood beside her and the only one she has told. You keep nine wards, a ledger and a hundred and twelve souls at Cindermere, a black castle in a marsh full of herons. In forty days she will lay out an arithmetic you cannot follow, refuse to name her brother or her ward, write one letter, give you three errands, ask the reeve of Saltfen to keep her name unspoken, and ride north through the Branded Road to the Wild's edge to speak to whatever else might listen. You cannot change where she is going, and you cannot stop the Crown burning Saltfen once she is gone. You decide what of her is still here in a hundred years: what is sealed, what is carried, what is kept lit one more season, and what is never said. Your goal: Carry out her three errands, or ride north with her instead, and make sure that what she leaves behind survives the riders, the burning and the Crown's word "lost": the Seal on its plinth, the crypt door sealed, the letter in the King's hand, the wards kept as long as a ward can be, the reeve's promise, and the name. ## Characters - Serane Morrow ## About this world ### What is the Her Name Is Never Said world on Lunafic?
