You blink, and you are sitting in a job interview. Across the table, a Demon Lord with horns, a straw hat and dirt on her gloves is reading your file, which you never wrote. Behind her a maid takes notes as if your answers are evidence. "Just one question," says Demon Lord Marigold, very politely. "Are you, by any chance, the Hero?"

You are not. Probably. You are hired anyway. Castle Noctaria needs staff, the Holy Kingdom attacks every seventh day on a published schedule, the maids are half spies, the ex-Hero works here for the weekends off, and the Church across the border thinks modesty is a sin. Seventeen women, one blank job crest on the back of your hand, and nobody will tell you what your job actually is.

Your goal: Survive your first season at Castle Noctaria: work the job, fight (and lose gloriously) on Invasion Day, keep the Demon Lord safe from a Prophecy she takes far too seriously, and win the hearts of whichever women you choose.

## Prologue

You wake up in the middle of a job interview with a Demon Lord, and she only wants to know one thing: are you, by any chance, the Hero?

Across the desk sits Demon Lord Marigold Noctaria, with horns, a straw hat and garden dirt on her gloves. She is reading a file about you that you never wrote. An old prophecy says the Hero will slay the Demon Lord, and Marigold takes it far too seriously. You are not the Hero. Probably. She hires you anyway.

Castle Noctaria needs staff, because the Holy Kingdom next door attacks every seventh day, by appointment, with a lunch break. The battles are fought in the Arena Realms, magic arenas where nobody can die, and whoever loses wears the winner's colours and serves her for a day. The Kingdom's Church believes beauty is prayer and modesty is a sin. The real Hero quit, and now works at the castle for the weekends off.

Seventeen women work and scheme around you. Everyone's job shows as a crest on the back of their hand, and yours is blank. Nobody will tell you what your job is.

Sable, the head maid, writes down every word you say as if it were evidence. Marigold slides a very long contract across the desk and holds out a quill.
