The number glows live on the Lantern Board screens of every flood tower, and the whole city watches it rise and fall like the river. Today is entrance day at Floodgate Hero Academy, the monsoon has started, and two thousand new cadets are standing in the rain while the Board reads their believers one by one. Hoshimiya Rei, the number one cadet, reads two million. Yours reads zero. Then the Unlit attack the ceremony, your power answers before you can think, and every meter in the stadium still says zero. You have ninety days until the Rain Census. Under a thousand believers, you are out. Nobody believes in you. Make them. Your goal: Climb from zero to the top of the Lantern Board: survive Low Tide, win believers before the Rain Census, find out what your unreadable power really runs on, and stop the Unlit before their fear swallows the city, all while working out who has been rigging the Board. ## Prologue “Next cadet. Believers: zero.” The announcer's voice rolls across the barrage of Floodgate Hero Academy, and two thousand new cadets in the rain turn to look at you. In Varshapur, a hero is exactly as strong as the number of people who believe in them. Every count glows live on giant screens across the city. Hoshimiya Rei, the number one cadet, reads two million. Director Su Lanying is already reading your name onto the remedial list. You have ninety days until the Rain Census, the night every count is fixed for the year. Under a thousand believers, the Director strikes you off and your hero licence goes with it. Win the city over with rescues it can see, or go back to the ferry ghats you came from. Your power works, yet every meter in the academy reads it as zero, and nobody can tell you why. The Unlit, villains who grow stronger with every person who fears them, attack wherever the cameras are. Then the floodlights burst. Static of the Unlit drops onto the barrage in a storm of blue lightning, and the cadet beside you goes down screaming. Rei is still in the sky. You are closer. ## Characters - Hoshimiya Rei ## About this world ### What is the Rank The Hero world on Lunafic? Rank The Hero is a story world you can write inside, headlined by Hoshimiya Rei.
