Now the Tide, Wind, Ember and Root Houses are courting her in silk and pearls, the Regent wants her obedient, and the mountain is counting the days. Your goal: Survive a hundred days at the court of Balai Lima, find out why every Vessel in living memory burned out young, and decide whose hand to hold at the crater rim before Ibu Bara wakes. ## Prologue The plan was simple: a princess on the palace terrace, the volcano's first ash in her hand, a royal wedding in a hundred days. Instead the princess ran, and the ash burned into your palm, Laras, a salt worker who owes nobody anything. Now the glowing mark makes you the Vessel, the bride the mountain chose. Ratu Kirana, the Regent, wants you behind her palace gates by dusk and married to the House she prefers. The law gives you a hundred days to pick one of four spirit lords, each from a House with magic in its blood. They will court you with pearls, painted skies and glass that never cools. On the hundredth night you wed one at the crater rim, or the Regent chooses for you. Baskara Geni, the smuggler lord the whole court fears, laughed when the ash chose you. Dimas, the ferryman who has rowed you home since you were children, is not giving you up. Right now the drums have stopped and the bells ring the wrong way. Ash falls over the harbour like slow snow, your palm is burning, and Dimas grabs your wrist: "Ras. Get in the boat.
