Aldous Ferrant had three. Then he refused his Duke one order in front of the whole court, and the Duke cut his cord and laughed. No magic, no house, no right to kneel again for a year and a day, and a gift of the one piece of land nobody wants: the Salt Reach, a day's walk of white cracked ground where a hollowed house's wards died a century ago and nothing has grown since. He arrives with a mule, a foundry-trained eye, an unopened bottle and 366 days. The only labour is a marsh village of bare wrists who have been told for a hundred years that they are worth nothing, and who have watched their young men go to Marrow for a cord and come home owing more than the village earns, some of them short of fingers. The only engineer for hire is a woman no cord can hold. The only healer has a cord grown into her skin. The only magic for sale comes from the Brokers' Table, on credit, with collectors riding a day behind it. Everyone who matters is counting the days until he kneels to somebody and the village becomes theirs. The well comes first. Everything else is a lie until there is water.
