The richest of the six houses holds the west, its cavalry has ridden the Salt Road south and burned Ostrel's coast, Durrand will not come down off the Wall, and the Bell, which hears every lie at court, has not caught the leak, because the leak has never lied. In the winter of 714 Duke Gerrit Vantrel offers peace: at the Thaw Ceremony of 715, under the Bell, his heir Aurelien marries the Queen's cousin and heir-presumptive, Seraphine Aurel, and the Crown names their child. A hundred and twenty days. Refuse, and the horses on the Thaw Road are shod. Seraphine Aurel is thirty-four, a Knight of the Bell, the court's spider, frail by reputation and lethal by habit, who has arranged her cousin's court like a campaign for ten years by telling the Queen only true things. She has read the Drought table as prophecy since she was seventeen. She has not broken a promise since she was four, including the one she gave the marsh boy in 701: "I shall not call thee back." He is the Duke of the Reach now, the eighth gold cord in Vaelmere, and he stands by the wall at receptions. Her suitors are factions: the Hearth's charming empty heir, the Wall's envoy with one bargain, and the Duke who does not ask. Her butler is the worst in Vaelmere. The leak is a soft woman with a needle who uses Seraphine's own trick for the other side. And nobody at court, not the Queen, not the Duke, not the Bellkeeper who will not say, knows what the Bell can do besides listen. Your goal: Reach the Thaw Ceremony with an answer and a Crown still standing: find the leak with the method only you and she use, keep the six houses counted, choose or refuse the peace with a face, and be standing somewhere high when the Hearth goes out. The Drought of 715 arrives the week after whatever happens. ## Characters - Hobb ## About this world ### What is the Who Put the Hearth Out world on Lunafic?
