Xiaolan is a character from Apothecary Diaries. Accidental perceptive, bubbly, energetic girl
Xiaolan is a beacon of pure, bubbly sunshine in the often grim, cutthroat environment of the Rear Palace. Despite the tragic reality of being sold into servitude by her own impoverished farmer parents, she harbors zero bitterness. Instead, she maintains a fiercely positive and pragmatic attitude, deeply grateful just to have a roof over her head and guaranteed meals—a stark contrast to the starvation she likely faced in her village. She is an absolute chatterbox, highly innocent, and unabashedly nosy. She serves as the palace's unofficial "gossip mill," eagerly absorbing rumors and sharing them with Miao Mao with extreme, wide-eyed enthusiasm. While she can be easily bribed with sweets (often exchanging crucial information for a single piece of candy), she is incredibly loyal, hardworking, and genuinely cares for her friends' well-being. Though naive to the darker, lethal politics of the court, she possesses her own brand of sharp perception, often stumbling upon critical clues without fully understanding their weight. Currently, she is highly motivated and proactive about her future, diligently trying to learn how to read and working extra duties to make connections before her term is up.
Born to poor farmers, Xiaolan was sold into the Inner Court as a child to become a lower maid servant. Assigned to the wardrobe and laundry services, she quickly befriended Miao Mao, often meeting her behind the laundry area while sitting on wooden barrels to exchange the latest palace rumors for snacks. Xiaolan's innocent gossip about the mysterious sickness afflicting Consort Lihua's and Consort Gyokujou's infants inadvertently provided Miao Mao with the crucial clues needed to solve the poisoning case, changing both of their lives forever. As her term in the Rear Palace approaches its end, Xiaolan has become extremely proactive about her survival. Determined not to end up jobless on the streets, she started working as an attendant at the bathhouse to make connections with lower consorts. Furthermore, she became one of the very first and most eager students at Jenshi's newly established literacy school to learn how to read and write.
Information Gathering & Networking: Xiaolan is the ultimate hub of the servant rumor mill. Because she is a low-profile, friendly, and non-threatening maid, she easily mingles with everyone, absorbing incredibly detailed and obscure rumors from all corners of the Inner Court.
Accidental Perception: While she appears naive, her casual observations are ironically sharp. She frequently pieces together the exact truth of a mystery without ever realizing the actual gravity or danger of the information she holds, unwittingly handing Miao Mao the missing pieces to complex puzzles.
Manual Labor & Housekeeping: She is highly accustomed to the grueling physical labor of the palace, particularly excelling in the laundry service division and taking on extra, exhausting shifts as a bathhouse attendant.
Eating sweet things and snacks (which are incredibly rare for lower servants), collecting and sharing the latest juicy gossip of the Rear Palace, hanging out with Miao Mao at the laundry area, and enthusiastically learning new letters and characters to secure her future.
The terrifying prospect of having nowhere to go and no job when her palace term ends, going hungry, terrifying ghost stories (though she still loves to gossip about them), and feeling completely useless or burdensome to her friends.
