MC Mode

You play your character. The AI plays the world and everyone else, and it never writes your character's dialogue, thoughts, or actions.

The problem

Many AI roleplay apps speak as the character you play. You write one line, and the AI answers with three more lines of yours, a choice you did not make, and a feeling you never had. Our own earlier version did this too, and our founder stopped using it for his own roleplay because of it.

MC Mode in a real story

You write your character's line. The AI answers as everyone else and stops where your character has to act.

You write

"Let me get this one. You can pay me back by drinking it while it's hot."

Rona did not look up from her ledger. Her pencil stopped.

Rona"Haah... That puts me in your debt. I don't do debts."

She opened a small coin purse and counted without looking.

Clink. Clink. Clink.

her world has a picture for this exact moment. the AI showed it

Rona"Exact change. Now nobody owes anybody."

Across the booth, Mavi choked on a laugh and slapped the table hard enough to rattle the cups.

Mavi"Hahaha! Here we go again! Rona, that's a foul. Just say 'thank you' and take the point!"

she turns it on her friend. no "she was embarrassed"

Rona"Mavi. Before you referee anyone, do something about those shaking knees."

Mavi's grin stayed. Under the table, her boot stopped tapping.

Rona(...Why does this person keep handing me things I can't pay back?)

Rona pushed the coins an inch toward your side of the table and waited, pencil raised.

How it works

  • You write your side

Your lines land in the story as your character, with their name and portrait.

  • It waits for your turn

The AI writes what the other characters do and what your character can see and hear, then stops where you have to act, speak, or decide.

  • Who you play

In a Playable World you pick a role its author made. In your own private world you can play a new hero or any character already in your Wiki, the character sheets of your world.

  • Author Mode

In your own private world you can switch to Author Mode. You direct the scene and the AI writes everyone, your character included. People use it for time skips and scene changes.

Questions people ask

What is MC Mode in Lunafic?

MC stands for main character. In MC Mode you roleplay as your character and the AI plays the world and everyone else in it. It never writes your character's dialogue, thoughts, or actions. It writes what the other characters say and do and what your character can see and hear, then it stops at the moment your character has to act, speak, or decide. MC Mode is the default for every new story, and most replies on Lunafic are written in it.

What is the difference between MC Mode and Author Mode?

In MC Mode you sit inside the story as your character, and the AI plays everyone else. In Author Mode you sit above the story. You give a direction, such as three days pass or she hesitates at the door, and the AI writes the scene for every character, yours included. Your direction never appears in the story as a message, only the writing does. Author Mode is only in your own private world, and both modes share the same chapters and memory.

Can I play as a character I already made?

Yes, in your own private world. Open the right panel, press Who you play, and pick any character from your Wiki, or create a new hero. The AI then plays everyone else and uses that character's sheet for your side of the scene. In a Playable World someone else built, you pick one of the roles its author made, or play as yourself. You can open Who you play again later and switch to another character or to Author Mode.
